Information

Byungtaek Jeon is a figurative artist. He used to focus on contradiction and immanent meaning of things and described the naked body of the world we are living in.

Now the artist displays his integrated philosophy through his card towers. Each card meets on the edge; the art that Jeon creates becomes more like a sculpture in canvas and those pile of cards consequently resurrect as art. The card tower seems stable yet it actually faces such a high chance to collapse down at any time. Also, public figures like animals and characters add odd and insecure conditions to the tower; this ironic and illogical status stands for our lives.

Jeon captures people’s lives from cards. 52 cards represent 52 weeks of a year. 365, the sum of numbers in cards, means a year. And each symbol has a meaning; heart being love and saint, clover being cudgel and farmer, spade being sword and death, and diamond being wealth and merchant. There is a hierarchy in symbols; spade grasps the highest position in the ladder following by diamond, heart, and clover in order. He thought this exactly reflects our lives by so-called “class” in this equal democratic world.

His art is a combination of figurative and pop art. His artworks are collected by a number of influential institutions such as Museum of Contemporary Art, Osan Museum of Art, Seoul Museum of Art and he is broadening his footage to European countries, Hong Kong, Malaysia and more.
