About Artist

When looking at the color of mother of pearl under its uneven shell, I can see its inner side is dreaming of another world. I believe making another shape of light by collecting each little piece speaks of transformation and reincarnation, or even can speak of a form of memory.

I use mother of pearl as a material. The light from mother of pearl and the images in my work shows a course of changing into another shape, which is to show a course of complicated and tumultuous rebirth in the shape of light heading for another world. The memory of playing house when I was young was a game to gather broken plates, sand, shells picked up from the shore, and mother of pearl which fell from the wardrobe, which, in my imagination, helped me create a beautiful dresser or a shiny jewelry box.

While looking at them, I consider myself someone alive with a beautiful dream. It is no different to myself who used to dream of another space. I look at the beauty of mother of pearl with excitement. As I become more and more interested in old plates, I begin to think of a plate as another birth of a clod of earth. The clod crumbles at the end and becomes something else. While mineral turns the organism, an organism turns inorganic matter, which then transforms into another organism. Old heritages, something stagnant and dreaming of the new world, arouse new images.

The works I have completed to date express my inner desire and passion to move forward. Like a dream, not being satisfied with reality but showing images of reincarnation, transformation to another world, and orientation. Living things possess the new world they desire confidently and greatly as with mother of pearl, a medium which possesses unevenness outside but cherishes its color inside. This work gives body to the images of ‘receive’, ‘possess’, and ‘realize.’ These make us dream of rebirth by making us encounter and cherish new living things through constantly changing shape and course. The glamour of subdued colors corresponds with the world of immanent dreamlike an ecosystem showing the endless process of living things.
